If you're like many people today, you've heard about the weight loss drive of some of the top fad diets to take carbohydrates out of the diet. While this isn't necessarily the healthiest idea in the world, many people adamantly are trying to shake off carbs, no matter what. For this, there is a steady increase in demand for low carb meal plans.

First let's talk about what exactly a carbohydrates are, so we can know how to avoid them if need be. Carbohydrates are essentially starches and sugars, at least after they break down in the stomach and enter the blood stream. Though most dieters are shy of consuming sugar, the reality is that many foods that are not typically thought of as "sugary" do break down to this essential substance, such as potatoes and broccoli. Sugar, after all, is one of the primary energy sources of the human body and is the only substance that the brain feeds on (besides possibly a good joke every now and then).

Carbohydrates are primarily found in fruits, vegetables, and junk food. A strange grouping this is as the first two are basically healthful whilst junk food is anything but good for the body. The best way to differentiate what is good for you and what is not, particularly in terms of dieting, is to refer to the glycemic index, readily available all over the World Wide Web.

However, this is not to say that we cannot have low carb meal plans. From time to time this is a good way to lose 'water pounds' -that is, weight from your body that is made up of water. This is a bit of a quick fix, however, and should not be practiced for too long a period of time, particularly for athletes and older people.

For low carb meal plans, the secret is to avoid fruits and vegetables along with starches like spaghetti (and all pastas) and breads. Of course, this is contrary to the food pyramid put out by the FDA, which recommends these items above all others. So, when making low carb meal plans, consider what is left on the pyramid. Of course, sweets and oils should still be shunned, but proteins are a major source of meals that exclude carbs.
