Popular culture today tells us that low carb diet food is the only way to lose weight and be healthy. While there are grains of truth to this, the whole matter of truth is something else altogether. For this reason, this article will briefly delve into some of the truths and fallacies of carbohydrates in relation to weight loss and overall health.

First of all, weight loss and good general health are not synonymous. If this sounds ridiculous, consider overweight people who are in their seventies and eighties. While it's true that losing weight vastly improves a person's overall health, some people can be overweight and, aside from this single guideline, still be considered in good health.

Of course, the reality is that it is best to be trim. Not everyone is blessed with the special genes that let some people be obese and still allow them to head for their nineties. The simple fact of the matter is that by lowering their weight, people will put less of a strain on their hearts, abdomens, and musculature. For this reason, many feel that low carb diet food is the way to go. This too is a bit of a misnomer.

In common parlance, carbohydrates give the body sugar for energy. Sugar (or the metabolic intermediate glucose, more specifically) is usually coupled with the thought of calories, one of the big monsters of weight acquisition. However, the truth is that the thinnest people in the world also take on a lot of sugar into their system, by way of carbohydrates, and not only does this not harm them, but aids their bodies in proper metabolic functioning.

This is not to say that low carb diet food is a bad idea, either. For people who are obese, low carb diet food may be ideal. Or, better still, the type of carbohydrates that are consumed are what really matter. The reason for this is that all carbs are not the same, some breaking down into sugar quickly (bad), and others digesting and metabolizing at a much slower pace (good).

So the secret, really, is to learn which is which. After all, why should anyone be deprived of foods that not only taste good, but are good for their overall health?
