Today low carb diet plans abound with promises both grandiose and fantastic. This is not to say that these plans don't work, as certainly some diet schedules must work, lest the diet industry be out on its ear. However, it's best that a few basic terms be better understood in order to better understand carbohydrates and their relationship to dieting.

First, while low carb diet plans generally sound great, it would also be wonderful to understand the meaning of "low carb." From a scientific point of view, this phrase is undocumented, unquantified (so far), and a fabrication of the diet industry. This is not to say that this will remain thus forever. The FDA is presently making strides to give an exact, working definition of just this phrase.

Yet what is the big deal with not understanding the exact meaning of this phrase, you ask? Dieting is like a race in that you have to know exactly how far you have to run even before you leave the starting block. If you're told that the race is 500 meters, that gives you a figure to work with in your head, to compare to all of the previous races of varying lengths that you've run in the past. Likewise, when you can actually see the finish line that is equally encouraging.

So it is with low carb diet plans and having an understanding of "low carb." The reason for this is simple. With lists like the glycemic index, a person can understand just how much sugar (and in other lists, calories) a specific food item has. By this means, an exact figure can be tallied as to the level of sugar and caloric intake that happens on a daily basis. As 500 calories a day less can help a person to lose a pound a week, it quickly becomes clear what powerful tool knowledge of a simple phrase is.

Of course the next step is to determine just which foods constitute "low carb" -as well as high and medium tiers to this definition. With this a greater level of control on eating habits can be induced. After that, it becomes a matter of will power. When all of these ideas converge into action is when your low carb diet plans will begin to work. Eat with success.
