Okay, we're slowly starting to get it: losing weight by itself is simply not enough. There have been numerous reports about people dying from diets that simply are not healthy, even if they are tasty. Everything from all-meat diets to ice cream diets has enticed us only to prove a flop, and sometimes a fatal flop, at that. Yet of late the concept of low carbohydrates has become a large fad worth looking into. What exactly is good (or bad) about low carb nutrition? This article will address just this issue.

As our overall health is as important as losing weight (which in of itself is somewhat bad for the body, depending upon the level of obesity), it is a must that we eat that which will help our bodies. To eat something purely for the purposes of losing weight is not enough. If it were, people would go on paper diets; paper doesn't have many calories and is full of roughage. Unfortunately, it isn't very nutritious, either, not to mention that it's tasteless. The fact is, food is fuel, foremost.

Low carb nutrition is a relatively new thing. It's so new that the American FDA hasn't yet come up with an exact definition for "low carb" -meaning just how much sugar the body should take in per day. As well, also due to the newness of low carb nutrition, we don't really know of the possible downsides to this diet. For this reason, moderation is extremely important.

As with any diet, jumping into it too quickly can come as a shock to your body, which is never really a good thing. Slowly tempering the body away from carbohydrates, rather than pushing for a near-complete absence of all carbohydrates is the prudent approach.

Further, low carb nutrition, to truly meet the definition of "nutrition," must include a host of staple dietary standards to ensure (as best as is possible), a healthy diet. This includes the standard of an ample intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, a marked limit of oils and sugars (particularly processed sugar), and a regimen of a regular, healthy diet. With this combination of practical habits, success can hardly help but come a-knockin' at your door.
