Tired of everyone else looking so much thinner than you? Or maybe you simply don't have the kind of energy you used to, and you want it back. Everyone knows that diet is half of the key to the solution, but you want to know more, right? You've heard about low carb weight loss and you want to see if it's for you, so let's get started.

First things first. While dieting is a great way to lose weight, you don't want to sacrifice your health. This is an important point, as many people believe that being thin means being healthy. If this were true, people wouldn't die of anorexia nervosa on a regular basis. To illustrate a more specific example, think of Bruce Lee. The great martial artist was not only thin, he was also quite limber, muscular, and in a word, amazing at his athletic prowess. And yet he died, which shows that something within his body was NOT healthy.

With that in mind, it's important to approach low carb weight loss with both caution and a bit of knowledge. First, carbohydrates are not your enemy. Well, not all of them, at least. Potato chips are not exactly your friends, but watermelon, on the other side of the carbo coin, won't hurt you.

A great consideration with low carb weight loss is a goodly understanding of the glycemic index. In a nutshell, the glycemic index is a listing of all of the foods that you can imagine. This index of foods (which is easily found online) states gram for gram the amount of sugars in a given food and how that will affect your blood glucose (blood to sugar ratio) levels within 2 hours of consumption.

Some carbohydrates, like those found in potato chips, break down quickly, virtually stunning your body with sugar and a greater demand for insulin (of which a regular repeat of this demand can lead to diabetes and weight gain). Thus, a carbohydrate that breaks down more slowly is easier on your body, and can aid in weight loss as well as the amelioration of overall health. So, while low carb weight loss is feasible, don't deny yourself the good carbohydrates, either.
