The latest diet craze that's sweeping the nation deals with low carb foods. It seems that every other star in Hollywood is on some low carbohydrate diet or other, and endorsing it with a ferocity only matched by the amount of money entering their bank accounts for doing so. But what does this all mean?

Low carb foods are simply foods that have a minimal amount of carbohydrates, which is said to stimulate weight loss. The reality is that it does tend to work, though health risks are imminent. The truth behind this idea is that meals low in carbs really just eliminate extra water from the body. Water, being so essential to the body, shouldn't be depleted too quickly. As well, water does not equal fat, which is the real culprit. So, while a person does lose weight, it can come right back without the proper diet. This is not to say that many low carb foods are not good for you, as some, like whole grains, are excellent for the body.

A further aspect which low carb foods aids in dieting is through a diminished appetite. This is naturally beneficial at a glance. By reducing carbohydrates from the diet, fat naturally burns -yet without these carbs, a byproduct called ketones are also created. Ketones and the process of their increased presence in the bloodstream, called ketosis, slow the appetite. However, when ketosis exists for a period of time, minerals are leeched from the body, hurting the bones and other aspects of good somatic health.

The third aspect to carbohydrates and weight loss is that when low carbs become a diet standard, caloric intake is usually reduced likewise. This naturally also contributes to weight loss.

The thing to remember, no matter what combinations of foods you're eating or what outright diet you're consuming, is that moderation is key and excess is like death, usually metaphorically, and sometimes literally. Of course, every body is different, and what may work for one may make another suffer miserably. For this reason, it is best to consult a dietician, who will test your body and weigh important considerations together (such as present weight, age, ethnicity, and eating habits, amongst others).
