The prevailing wisdom today amongst those who worship thinness and fear the dreaded fattening of society is that carbs are "out". While this dieting philosophy is an effective way to lose weight in the short-run, in the long-run nutritionists and dieticians recommend a more balanced diet, which includes carbohydrates. However, for those looking for a low carb meal, this article may help to sort a few things out.

First off, carbs are generally found in fruits, vegetables, pastas, and breads. While carbohydrates have been rounded off and grouped together as one vast demon, the truth is that there are different variances of carbohydrates, and knowing these differences may allow your low carb meal a little room for exception.

First, if a carb-based food is processed, then it's not as good as if it is natural. You can identify levels of processing in two or three basic ways. The first is by how chopped up, ground up, and even pulverized (as with flour in bread) a carb is. As well, reading the packages of food products will sometimes be indicative, as terms like "whole grain" related to little or no processing.

Also, the more packaging a product requires is often a good giveaway. For instance, consider apples versus spaghetti. One comes, at best, by itself, and at worst, waxed or pre-bagged. Spaghetti on the other hand, comes in a box (and sometimes in a plastic bag that in turn is also in a box). This is bad for the environment, and not so good (comparatively) for you. Sadly, by definition, a low carb meal would exclude both of these food items.

The last simple way to determine processing, especially with breads and pastas, is by how white or 'not white' the product is. Most spaghetti is white, though now darker spaghettis are making their way onto the market. As well, while white bread is more ubiquitous, darker breads are slowly edging their paler cousins out, as darker breads are usually whole grained, and so less (if at all) processed.

So when considering a low carb meal, do be a bit flexible. Carbohydrates, when from nature and little processed, are an excellent source of nutrition and good health.
