Well, the jury is still out regarding whether a low carbohydrate diet is safe or not, though every year the proponents of certain pro-protein, anti-carb diets are getting sued. This is not to say that these low or no-carb diets are wrong, but the opposite can't be said either, especially as so many doctors are on the fence over this issue. Only time will tell. Until time indeed provides the scoop, for those who want to cut carbs, this article will provide a low carb foods list.

To be healthy, or at least attempt to be, a low carb food list should include as wide a variety of other food types as possible. For this reason, we'll talk about a few food groups though much of this low carb foods list is not so vegetarian friendly. As well, others that follow special diets, such as kosher codes, may be left out, if only a bit.

First of all, meats and proteins are big on diets like Atkins and South Beach, as meat is definitely not a carbohydrate. Only beware, as too much meat, whether red or white, can be a bad thing (as anyone who has ever had a triple bypass -or more simply, goiter, will attest).

This means you can eat beef, chicken, duck, and fish of all types, including flounder, sole, trout, and tuna (though the last is said to be high in mercury these days). Moving past meat in our low carb foods list we've got -mmm: cheese. This is a product almost all of us like and any type of cheese works, only be careful to not consume too much as cheese does contain some carbs.

Next up is a food group of sorts that is highly recommended for any low carb foods list. These are the so-called "salad vegetables," named with good reason. This includes the veggies that you know and love from salads and other food combinations.

These vegetables include chicory, jicama, alfalfa sprouts, Romaine lettuce, Boston lettuce, cucumbers, bok choy, peppers, radicchio, mushrooms, endive, daikon, chives, sorrel, and fennel.

It should be noted that this list is by no mean exhaustive, as too with the other lists above. Yet this sampling of foods will give you an idea as to the wide number of carb-alternate foods available.
